The current stable version is 1.0.5, released 17 March 2008. This removes a potential security vulnerability (CERT-FI 20469 as it applies to bzip2) present in versions 1.0.4 and earlier. All users should upgrade to 1.0.5 immediately.

Here is the 1.0.5 source tarball , which includes full documentation.

If you can be bothered, please email me to say you've got a copy. It's nice to know where this stuff gets to.

Executables for 1.0.5

Nowadays bzip2 ships as standard on many Unix / Linux systems. If you're using one of those, it might be worth checking if it is already installed, or is present on the installation media.

bzip2 is very portable. It should run on practically any 32 or 64 bit computer, if you have enough spare memory (at least 8 megabytes). If you have an ANSI C compiler, you have a very good chance of building a working executable from the sources with minimal difficulty.
